What Causes Sleep Apnea and Snoring?

Sleep apnea is a sleep disorder where your breathing pauses multiple times every night. The pauses can be very short and frequent and you may not wake up. The pausing is caused when your airway becomes partially or completely blocked. Because your breathing is interrupted, apnea results in lower oxygen flow which causes “micro-awakenings. Over time this can have a serious negative impact on the quality of your sleep and your health.

Snoring occurs when the tissues around your airway relax and vibrate while you are breathing, producing the familiar snoring sound. Snoring can not only have negative effects on your own health, but it can disrupt your family’s sleep as well.

Snoring and sleep apnea have been linked to an increased risk for high blood pressure, stroke, heart disease, mood disorders, headaches, GERD, obesity, and drowsiness during the day.
